The electric vibrator was invented as a medical device to cure “hysteria,” which was believed from the time of Hippocrates until 1952 to be the uterus’ revolt against sexual deprivation, causing a woman to display of mental or emotional distress. Genital massage was a standard treatment and its objective was to induce “hysterical paroxysm” (better known as orgasm) in the patient. But that took time and dexterity, so doctors were thrilled when portable, electric vibrators were invented.

This fall, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy, and Rupert Everett star in Hysteria, a movie all about this amazing invention.
