Val Edward Kilmer was born on December 31, 1959, in Los Angeles, California. Val Kilmer and his two brothers grew up on a ranch in Arizona that was once owned by movie legend Roy Rogers, and it was there that he first tried his hand at acting by performing for his parents’ guests. After landing his first commercial at the age of 12, Val Kilmer spent the rest of his teen years perfecting his abilities as a performer and even managed to become the youngest drama student ever admitted to the prestigious Juilliard School of Performing Arts.

His schooling completed, Val Kilmer kicked off his career by taking on roles in a diverse selection of New York-based stage plays alongside such future stars as Kevin Bacon and Sean Penn. In 1984, Val Kilmer made his cinematic debut with a starring role in the spoof Top Secret! which, although a commercial failure during its release, has since become a cult favorite among college students and comedy buffs alike. He followed that up with a role in another cult classic, 1985’s Real Genius, and cemented his status as a promising up-and-comer with a role in the 1986′s Tom Cruise-smash Top Gun.

Val Kilmer closed out the ‘80s with a lead role in Ron Howard’s fantasy epic Willow, though it wasn’t until he stepped into the shoes of doomed singer Jim Morrison in 1991’s The Doors that he firmly established himself as a bona fide A-list performer. Val Kilmer’s scene-stealing turn as Doc Holliday in the 1993 Western Tombstone earned the actor a raft of critical accolades and kudos, which he parlayed into the coveted role of Bruce Wayne in 1995’s Batman Forever. That same year, Val Kilmer worked with such cinematic icons as Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Jon Voight in the acclaimed Michael Mann thriller Heat — a role for which he was nominated for Most Desirable Male at the MTV Movie Awards.

After his stint in Heat, Val Kilmer received the opportunity to work side-by-side with another of his heroes, Marlon Brando, in the 1996 film The Island of Dr. Moreau. Though the movie was a critical and financial disaster, Val Kilmer continued to work steadily throughout the rest of the decade in efforts such as 1996’s The Ghost and the Darkness, 1997’s The Saint and 1999’s At First Sight. Val Kilmer’s relentless work ethic was certainly reflected in his turn-of-the-century output, as the actor — between the year 2000 and 2007 — popped up in almost two dozen films, including the 2003 Tommy Lee Jones drama The Missing and the 2005 Robert Downey Jr. actioner Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. After lending his voice to talking car K.I.T.T. in the updated version of Knight Rider (2008), Val Kilmer agreed to take on the starring role in a gritty prison film Felon.
