People would like to believe that, as a child, Marilyn Manson was inappropriately touched by a distant relative, or that his father was a raving mad alcoholic who misplaced his rage in awful ways. The truth is that Manson — born Brian Hugh Warner — is just the son of Barb Wyer and Hugh Warner, a Catholic and an Episcopalian, who raised their son in Canton, Ohio, just as any boy should be raised. In fact, he had a rather comfortable middle-class upbringing and was quite close with his parents. Oh sure, he attended a private Christian school where he was exposed to some repelling truths and found comfort and a necessary outlet for revolt in rock music, but isn’t that kind of healthy? He even attended a community college to pursue a degree in journalism before making it on his own as a rock journalist in Southern Florida. So where did it all go wrong? What was the cataclysmic event that saw Brian morph into Marilyn? We’d like to think that there wasn’t any. We’d like to think that Marilyn Manson is just a talented individual with the same predilection for angst, insecurity and anxiety that we all suffer from. He just happens to have a strong gravitation toward the occult and a keen sense of self-promotion to match. At least, that’s what we tell ourselves to help us sleep at night.

Marilyn Manson forms marilyn manson and the spooky kids
As a rock journalist for the South Florida lifestyle magazine 25th Parallel, Marilyn Manson — then Brian Hugh Warner — knew he was destined for more. After showing some lyrics and poems that he had written to local musician Scott Putesky, Manson and his new friend decided to form a band, bringing on a man named Brian Tutunick as well. The bandmates decided to assume stage names that combined the first name of female Hollywood icons and the last name of notorious serial killers. From then on, the three musicians would be known as Marilyn Manson, Daisy Berkowitz and Olivia Newton Bundy, respectively, and were soon joined by Stephen Bier, who called himself Madonna Wayne Gacy. Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids were off and running, with world domination first on the agenda.

Marilyn Manson signs with nothing records
With club shows that consisted of naked women nailed to a cross, a child in a cage or bloody animal body parts, Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids’ popularity grew, and in 1993, they were brought to the attention of Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, who had just formed NOTHING Records. Reznor signed the band and offered them a spot on Nine Inch Nails’ upcoming world tour. When their debut album, Portrait Of An American Family, was released in 1993, the band was known simply as Marilyn Manson. Reznor produced the album himself, and the band toured the country relentlessly, paving the way for the EP Smells Like Children (which featured the hit cover of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams”) and its third — and most well-known — album, Antichrist Superstar, featuring the hit single “The Beautiful People.”

Marilyn Manson vs. joseph lieberman
In 1996, Marilyn Manson and company embarked on the “Dead To The World Tour” in support of the platinum-selling Antichrist Superstar. This spawned perhaps the most highly publicized battle between a towering, gothic rock star and a vertically challenged, nebbish senator the world had ever seen. Having caught wind of Manson’s violent lyrics and sexually explicit stage show (we’ve all heard the rumors), Republican Senator Joseph Lieberman referred to Marilyn Manson as “the sickest group ever promoted by a mainstream record company.” Ouch. The remainder of the tour’s shows were picketed by groups of a certain religious ilk, which only heightened Manson’s profile in the public consciousness. He went on to release the albums Mechanical Animals (the one where he has boobs), Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death), The Golden Age of Grotesque, and Eat Me, Drink Me, all the while selling out stadiums across the globe. His latest album, The High End of Low, was released May 26, 2009. Marilyn Manson: 1, Joseph Lieberman: 0.

Marilyn Manson came under even more public scrutiny when the sudden rash of school shootings in the U.S. — most notably Columbine — was unjustly blamed on him and his music. When asked what he would have said to Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris in Michael Moore’s biting documentary Bowling For Columbine, Manson proved just how eloquent and thoughtful he can be: “I wouldn’t say a single word to them; I would listen to what they have to say, and that’s what no one did.”

Marilyn Manson marries dita von teese
One thing no one can ever take away from Marilyn Manson is his ability to get hot chicks. After a highly publicized relationship with starlet Rose McGowan, Manson married mainstream fetish model and burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese. It was a match made in bondage heaven, until a young blond ingenue came along and spoiled all the fun. Due in part to his hard living, and due in part to his growing relationship with Evan Rachel Wood, Dita Von Teese filed for divorce, and the couple split. Von Teese had this to say about her failed marriage: “I get the impression he thinks I was unsupportive, but the truth is I wasn’t supportive of his lifestyle, and someone else came along who was.” On a lighter note, Manson and Wood — she appeared in his “Heart-Shaped Glasses” video — are one of the oddest couples in Hollywood and are still going strong. Go figure.
