James Paul Marsden was born on September 18, 1973, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The son of a professor and a nutritionist, James Marsden’s interest in acting was formed relatively early on — though his passion lay within the realm of more athletic endeavors. James Marsden even went through a phase in which he was particularly captivated by wrestling, with his decision to adopt the alter-ego of El Gato Negro (which translates to The Black Cat in English), certainly exemplifying his temporary dedication to the sport.
James Marsden spent about a year and a half studying journalism at Oklahoma State University, though his growing passion for acting ultimately led him to drop out and move to Los Angeles. It wasn’t long before he had landed his first role in 1993, a two-episode stint on the sitcom The Nanny, and James Marsden spent the next several years taking on a series of small parts in both television shows (Saved by the Bell: The New Class, Blossom) and movies (1996’s Public Enemies, 1997’s Campfire Tales).
James Marsden’s big break
It was thanks to his appearances on shows like Party of Five and Touched by an Angel that James Marsden’s profile grew steadily throughout the latter part of the ‘90s, with his relentless work ethic eventually landing him a starring role on the short-lived ABC series Second Noah (which also featured Joey Lauren Adams). James Marsden managed to follow that up with prominent parts in a pair of thrillers — 1998’s Katie Holmes vehicle Disturbing Behavior and 2000’s Gossip (alongside fellow rising stars Lena Headey and Kate Hudson) — though it was his stint as Cyclops in the 2000 X-Men adaptation that propelled him to a whole new level of fame.
James Marsden on ally mcbeal
James Marsden capitalized on his newfound notoriety by taking on a recurring role on the FOX series Ally McBeal, and also devoted himself to working side-by-side with hot young actors like Scott Speedman (2004’s The 24th Day), Rachel McAdams (2004’s The Notebook) and Elizabeth Banks (2005’s Heights). His decision to reprise the role of Cyclops in 2003’s X2 and 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand only increased his value among moviegoers, with his role as Richard White in Bryan Singer’s highly anticipated Superman Returns (2006) cementing his place as a matinee idol.
James Marsden in hairspray
In 2007, James Marsden received the opportunity to show off different sides of his personality after he appeared in both the light-hearted musical Hairspray and the high-concept comedy Enchanted. James Marsden’s critically acclaimed work in the 2008 Katherine Heigl rom-com 27 Dresses will be followed by a supporting role in the comedy Sex Drive, in which the actor will star as the central character’s absurdly pumped up and comically macho brother. 2009 looks to be another banner year for the bona fide movie star, as James Marsden will be seen opposite Cameron Diaz in the creepy thriller The Box, and alongside Jessica Biel and Jake Gyllenhaal in the comedy Nailed.
