Brittany Murphy was born Brittany Bertolotti, but her name and surroundings changed quickly following the divorce of her parents. Brittany Murphy adopted her mother’s last name and followed her to New Jersey, where she showed acting aspirations at the young age of 2. Her first acting break came at age 9, in a stage performance of Really Rosie. Less than five years later, Brittany Murphy and her mother relocated to Los Angeles, where Brittany attended John Burroughs High School and really began focusing on developing her acting career.
Brittany Murphy got her earliest professional exposure on television. After appearing in a commercial for Skittles, she landed a guest-starring role on the Emmy Award-winning series Murphy Brown. More regular work followed on shows like Drexell’s Class, Almost Home, Frasier, Blossom, and Sister, Sister. Having made the rounds of the sitcoms, Brittany Murphy turned her eye to the big screen.
Brittany Murphy in clueless and girl, interrupted
In 1995, Brittany Murphy hit the big screen in the Alicia Silverstone-led high school dramedy Clueless. In her role as a new student in desperate need of a makeover, Brittany Murphy put her own L.A. high school experience and solid comic timing to good use and was rewarded for it with a Young Artist Award nomination. Quirkier roles came next: as a lesbian with drug problems in Freeway (alongside Reese Witherspoon), and as a beauty contestant in Drop Dead Gorgeous (with Kirsten Dunst and Denise Richards). In 1997, Brittany cemented her place in American pop culture when she began lending her voice to the animated series King of the Hill. She kept this role for over a decade.
As she grew older, Brittany Murphy took on more challenging dramatic roles — often as very troubled women. She garnered her second Young Artist Award starring alongside Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder in 1999′s Girl, Interrupted, then eerily sang the words, “I’ll never tell” in 2001’s Don’t Say a Word.
Brittany Murphy in 8 mile and sin city
While Brittany Murphy was always eager to play Janis Joplin in a biopic of the singer’s life, this role never materialized. Instead, Brittany had a very different impact on the music world: she helped usher rapper Eminem into acting by playing his love interest in 2002’s 8 Mile. Her next few films were comedies (Just Married and Uptown Girls), but Brittany Murphy found her acting edge again in the 2005’s Sin City.
Brittany Murphy in the expendables
As she continued her voice duties on King of the Hill and took on additional ones for the 2006 animated hit Happy Feet, Brittany Murphy’s big-screen presence began to fade away. Just as she was making her first steps toward a movie comeback, she passed away suddenly on December 20th, 2009. The alleged cause of her death was cardiac arrest.
Brittany Murphy’s last major screen appearance will be in 2010′s The Expendables, the action film that brings together Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
